Hi SO FLOW Fam! Welcome to our first blog post! We thought this would be a great resource for all the things Southern Flow Yoga is passionate about – from yoga and exercise, to healthy recipes, mental health and maybe even some shopping! Follow along with us on our blogging journey to hear from our awesome team (they are SO knowledgeable about a wide range of topics) and maybe even Andi and Rebekah.
To kick off our first post, we decided to start with something near and dear to our hearts. While yoga is awesome in every way, shape and form, we are passionate about HOT YOGA. Why hot yoga in the South, where it’s generally pretty hot all the time? We explain the benefits of a heated flow below.
Hot Yoga is a MAJOR Calorie Burner.
As most of our members know, it gets pretty hot in our studio, which is set to 90+ degrees during all of our class offerings. That heat makes the workout more challenging. The heat makes your heart work harder and pump faster to push blood to the skin to help you feel cooler. More heart-pumping makes for a better cardio workout than doing the same routine in a cooler setting.
Additionally, when your heart is pumping more, your heart rate goes up, helping to burn calories. Even though you’re not doing “traditional” calorie burning exercises like running or jumping (well, you may have some little jumps in SCULPT from time-to-time), the heated room really gets the heart going.
If you have a Smart device to track your workouts, watch the dips and increases in your heart rate and the number of calories burned in each of our classes. You won’t be disappointed, that’s for sure!
Hot Yoga Increases Flexibility.
Not only are our classes HOT, but another perk of being in the South, is the ever-present natural humidity. Put the heat and the humidity together and you get the perfect recipe for a good stretch. Heat makes muscles more pliable, allowing you to increase your range of motion and get a deeper stretch within each pose. You’re likely to get a deeper stretch in our heated studio versus one with cooler temps.
Hot Yoga Increases Lung Capacity.
While it may FEEL harder to breathe in a heated room, the emphasis on breath in a hot yoga class helps your lungs retain more air. The deep breathing you practice in class forces your lungs to expand more than they usually do, allowing more oxygen into the bloodstream and to other vital organs.
Hot Yoga Helps Reduce Stress and Anxiety.
Feeling crummy, stressed or anxious? Take a yoga class. Better yet, take a HOT yoga class at Southern Flow Yoga. You are bound to feel so much better than you did before class. Sure, regular yoga is an awesome de-stresser, but hot yoga has some added benefits related to breathing. In hot yoga, you are focusing a lot on deeper breathing because of the heat in the room. These deep breaths are key to reducing stress and anxiety. Detoxification kind of goes hand-in-hand with this. Many of our poses (i.e., pyramid) are designed to detoxify. This detoxification helps clear junk out of your body through the power of sweat.
A heated workout might not be for everyone. If you have any serious health issues or are pregnant, check with your doctor before starting a hot yoga practice. Before each class, make sure you are hydrated (and stay hydrated throughout the day) and listen to your body!
Have we convinced you of the powerful benefits of hot yoga yet? Good! Check out Southern Flow Yoga’s schedule to book your next class. All three of our class offerings – SCULPT, STRETCH and SWEAT – are heated. Let us know how you feel after. And remember, regular practice in a heated studio will help you feel better and healthier all year long.
